University rankings and the disciplinary profile of universities

International university rankings have become an important tool for research policy makers and university managers in which to base their decisions. However, they present strong methodological and technical limitations that endanger the output of these decisions, threatening disciplinary diversification and neglecting national differences. This thesis analyzes these two specific aspects and propose visualization and science mapping methodologies as well as the use of national university rankings by fields as a means to surpass such limitations. My PhD research is intimately related with my participation on the Rankings I-UGR by fields and disciplines of Spanish universities project.
