Rankings I-UGR de universidades españolas según campos y disciplinas

Rankings I-UGR of Spanish Universities according to Fields and Scientific Disciplines) is based on research production on international journals with high impact and visibility. This ranking is different from others for the following reasons:

  • It is divided in fields (12) and scientific disciplines (37), and not by large areas of knowledge that diffuse different research profiles among universities. This way, it makes it easier to locate in which fields of endeavor are universities especially active and influential.
  • It proposes a ranking method that synthesizes 6 bibliometric indicators for production and impact, measuring qualitative and quantitative aspects of universities’ research production1.
  • The Thomson-Reuters Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports databases are used as information sources. These products index a selection of the best journals worldwide. They are source references of Spanish funding agencies for assessing on researchers’ performance at national and international levels (CNEAI, ANECA).
  • Large time periods are used: a ten year period and a five year period. This is done in order to provide the results with stability and detect possible changes on research activity.

In conclusion, the main goal of these rankings is to detect strengths and weaknesses in the Spanish Higher Education system regarding research on the different fields of endeavor. For this, “Rankings I-UGR of Spanish Universities according to fields and scientific disciplines” is a very useful product for decision makers on research policy and research managers related with the Higher Education system.
