Evaluation of monographs using the Book Citation Index

The Book Citation Index was launched in 2011 by Thomson Reuters within the Web of Science Core Collection platform. Its launch meant the realization of a long-waited demand to have large scale citation data on monographs. However, due to the lack until such moment of large sets of data on monograph citation, little is known on citation practices of books. Also, as with the release of any new data source, its coverage, limitationes and caveats should be explored in order to determine the convenience of using it for bibliometric purposes1. As a result, we undertook a full analysis of such database not only focused on analyzing the BKCI, but also examining citation patterns and potential approaches to analyze the scientific impact of monographs. This research became the first step towards the development of the BiPublishers portal.
