The difference between i.e.; e.g., and cf.
As a self-reminder I am including here when to use these three latin abbreviation when writing an academic paper. These are silly but hopefully, common doubts one has when writing.
- i.e. stands for id est, and means that is. It is used when clarifying a concept or sentence.
- e.g. stands for exempli gratia and means for example. It is used when examples are given of a concept or sentence.
- cf. stands for conferatur and means compare. It is used when referencing a paper out of many that could be cited, so that the reader can compare what you wrote with what is actually stated in the referenced paper.
